Jenny Mason, Founder of Jenny Mason Designs, is one of Austin’s favorite style leaders. The busy mom, interior designer, and philanthropist is leading the charge by example. Here, her pal, Curated Texan’s Lance Avery Morgan catches up with her to see what is motivating her approach to all things chic in 2024.
The best career advice I’ve received is…Listen closely to your clients and approach each project in a unique, custom way. I strive to make each design a reflection of the client’s tastes and goals while also pushing them a bit out of their comfort zone to unravel new contours of their personality.
Three qualities that got me where I am today as a designer are…My ability to blend polished and playful elements, my commitment to creating bespoke and highly personalized designs, and the importance I place on thoughtful planning — taking time to get it right with each client is essential.
Easiest career decision I ever made is…Choosing a path that fulfills me by making others happy. It’s not just about working; it’s about using design to create joy and deep satisfaction daily for my clients.
What is influencing me creatively in the design world right now is…I’m currently inspired by my surroundings, whether it’s a walk in nature or fashion. My favorite style involves mixing classic elements with a twist of modern and funky. I like to keep things real but also ensure that my designs have a timeless element that doesn’t go out of style.
If I had to live in one period, design-wise, it would be (and why)…The Parisian style of the 1920s-1940s. This era fascinates me with its blend of elegance, luxurious antiques, and Art Deco elements. It’s about the balance between classic charm and the daring spirit of design, creating spaces that are both timeless and expressive, with artistic elements.
How I made my first dollar…Babysitting for my neighbors when I was around 12 years old, and then working at Hardee’s when I was 15. I commuted on a Moped. But even back then I was obsessed with design. Working different jobs early in life and daydreaming is a great way to figure out what you love.
Last thing I binge/marathon watched…The last movie I watched was The Holiday, which I watch every year. It makes me laugh every time.
If I lived in a foreign city it would be…Paris. I love the architecture, the way of life, and the constant inspiration from the city’s omnipresent beauty.
What everyone/man/woman should try in her lifetime is…I believe everyone should try something that scares them every year. For me, this was joining as Vice President of the Center for Child Protection’s board. It’s a big responsibility but also a chance to make a real difference for vulnerable children.
Book that left a lasting impression on me…I recently read Outlive by Peter Attia. I love that Attia gives evidence-based, practical tips to taking care of yourself and live longer.
If I could compete in an Olympic sport it would be…Gymnastics. I’ve always been inspired by the grace and strength of gymnasts. Growing up, I had posters of Mary Lou Retton and Mitch Gaylord in my room.
If I weren’t doing what I do I would (be a…)…Fashion designer. I’m currently loving the designs from Alice and Olivia.
A celebrity I would prank phone call and what I would ask them is…Taylor Swift. I’d ask her how she stays so grounded despite her immense fame — and then apologize profusely for disturbing her.
My personal style signifier is…A trucker hat. I buy one as a souvenir everywhere I go.
The classic designer I wish was still designing today would be…I wish Ralph Lauren was still actively designing. Everything he touches never goes out of style.
The last meal that truly impressed me was…Verdad, a new Mexican restaurant. The cuisine had a unique flair and was delicious.
My style icon is…A blend of Jackie O. and Audrey Hepburn, for their timeless, playful elegance.
In my fridge you will always find…Cottage cheese and Bitchin’ Sauce. Not necessarily together.
My perfect day would end… A family dinner, sharing stories and laughter.
On my tombstone it will say…Always lead with kindness. Treat others like you want to be treated — just as my mom taught me
