As event co-chairs, what inspired each of you to take on this leadership role for The Trail Conservancy?
MADELINE MEYER:
The Butler Trail holds a special place in my life, a place where many of my favorite memories have been made. As someone who loves the outdoors, I feel incredibly fortunate to live in a city with such a unique and vibrant space. I’ve served on the committee for the past three years, and after an inspiring first year, I was honored to step into the role of co-chair for the past two. I also joined the development and Seaholm committees to support The Trail Conservancy’s mission further. One of the most rewarding parts of this experience has been helping connect new companies and individuals in Austin to this incredible organization.
ANNA CAITLYN BUTLER:
The Butler Trail has been a part of my life since moving to Austin. It’s where I find peace, stay active, and connect with loved ones. I was inspired to co-chair Twilight on the Trail to support TTC’s mission to preserve this natural sanctuary and carry on the Butler Family’s stewardship of this amazing space. Co-chairing this event feels like a way to give back to a place that gives so much to all of us.
Austin’s trail system is beloved by so many. From your perspective, what makes it such a vital part of the city’s identity?
The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail is Austin’s heartbeat; an oasis hugging Lady Bird Lake that brings together people from all walks of life. It’s where runners, cyclists, families, and friends connect with nature and each other, embodying Austin’s commitment to outdoor living and community. The Trail’s role as a free, accessible space for exercise, relaxation, and connection makes it a cultural cornerstone. It reflects Austin’s identity as a city that values health, inclusivity, and the balance between urban growth and natural preservation.
What are some of the exciting initiatives or enhancements currently underway that attendees and donors at this event are directly supporting?
Twilight on the Trail 2025, set for October 26th at the Four Seasons Hotel, directly funds the overhead of The Trail Conservancy and contributes to several impactful TTC initiatives:
- Ecological Restoration: Planting 1,700 native plants annually to stabilize soil, improve water quality, and support wildlife,
- Infrastructure Improvements: Enhancing the Trail with new restrooms, water fountains, and signage, like the Butler Exercise Equipment, opened in 2023.
- Wishbone Bridge at Longhorn Dam: A future project to improve Trail connectivity and safety, with prototypes like the Maraca bench already engaging the community.

In your view, how does The Trail Conservancy’s work go beyond just the trails – what kind of ripple effect does it have on Austin’s community, wellness, and environment?
TTC’s work extends far beyond maintaining the Butler Trail; it’s about fostering a healthier, more connected Austin:
- TTC ensures the Trail is a welcoming space for all, from stroller-pushing parents to birdwatchers. Events like the Earth Day Clean-Up and art installations
- The Trail promotes physical and mental well-being, attracting over 5 million visitors annually for activities such as running, cycling, and yoga. A walk can be the best medicine.
- TTC’s ecological restoration, like clearing 15.4 acres of invasive species with goats in 2023, protects biodiversity and mitigates urban heat.
This ripple effect creates a city where people thrive, nature flourishes, and communities unite.
You’ve both played a key role in bringing this event to life. What do you hope guests walk away feeling, and doing, after the gala is over that night?
We hope guests leave Twilight on the Trail feeling inspired by the Butler Trail’s beauty and energized by Austin’s community spirit. The sunset views, live music, and unique auction items create a night that celebrates what makes Austin special. We want them to feel connected to TTC’s mission and motivated to act, whether by donating, volunteering for clean-ups, or simply spreading the word about the Trail being 95% privately funded. Our goal is for every guest to become an ambassador for the Trail’s future, ensuring it remains a cherished space for generations.

How can the community continue to support The Trail Conservancy after this event?
The community can support TTC year-round by:
- Membership: joining a TTC membership circle. There are four different tiers that can be found on the website.
- Volunteering: Join events like the Earth Day Clean-Up or trail maintenance days to directly care for the Butler Trail.
- Donating: Contribute to campaigns like the Seaholm Waterfront or become a monthly donor to sustain TTC’s work.
- Participating: Attend events like the Maudie’s Moonlight Margarita 5K (June 2023) or engage with art installations like RSM: POINT B.
- Advocacy: Share TTC’s mission on social media or with friends to raise awareness about the Trail’s importance.
