THE SCENE: Over the course of a memorable day in Houston, over 1,100 of Space City’s most notable community leaders, literary enthusiasts, music lovers, sociables, and philanthropists gathered for one of the area’s most impactful fundraising events. The crowd was on hand for the 32nd Annual Celebration of Reading. Benefiting the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, the day featured works and words from acclaimed authors that left guests wanting more. At both events, the “Literacy For All” theme served as both a throughline and a nod to the spirit of the late First Lady, whose presence could be felt throughout the day.

THE VIBE: The first chapter of the day commenced at the residence of Terri and John Havens to kick off the day’s festivities at the Author’s Luncheon. Here, the crowd had the opportunity to mingle with other literary authors as well as the opportunity to share a moment with the featured authors.

As the crowd arrived at the Hobby Center for Performing Arts for the Evening Program, the second chapter of the day, everyone could feel the magic in the air. Patrons posed for images on the step and repeat before proceeding to the Hobby Center foyer for a cocktail hour, where guests sipped on their favorite spirits and shared stories of their favorite moments from the luncheon.

The audience then headed inside the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts for the main program. The stage had been transformed into a living room replica, giving the large space an intimate feel. Neil Bush and Pierce Bush kicked off the festivities, thanking them for being a part of a special evening and honoring the former First Lady’s commitment to literacy.

Further settling into their seats, the crowd enjoyed readings of select passages by each of the three featured authors, who were introduced by Bush family members Lizzie Andrews, Sarabeth Bush, and Clemmie Pierce Martin. The three speakers for the evening included New York Times best-selling author Leon Carroll, Jr, Admiral William H. McRaven, and Emmy Award-winning actor and comedian Rob Riggle.

The program concluded with a special music performance by the iconic Lauren Adams. The four-time GRAMMY® Award-winning artist belted out a beautiful set of songs that beautifully tied into the soul of the evening.

Once the program concluded, guests then headed to their tables at various levels of the Hobby Center for a delectable, multi-course meal courtesy of City Kitchen Catering. Each table was elegantly designed with florals courtesy of H-E-B, which created a cheerful environment that encouraged conversation, learning, and light-hearted moments that capped off an eventful round of fundraising.

THE NON-PROFIT: The 2026 Celebration of Reading Author’s Luncheon was hosted by Terri and John Havens & Neal and Maria Bush, who also served as hosts for the Evening Program. The event raised over $2.2 million for the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation. Proceeds from the event will fund programs and initiatives that fulfill the organization’s mission to provide innovative literacy programs and expand access to high-quality services and resources that empower children, families, and adults with the support they need to learn to read, write, and comprehend.
