THE SCENE: The Post Oak Hotel in Houston was recently the setting for a wonderful afternoon that perfectly showcased the essence of love and giving back, with a real, life-changing impact for others. Several hundred Houston families, philanthropists, and community leaders gathered for the Houston Children’s Charity Chariots for Children. This year, a record-breaking 98 families were awarded brand-new wheelchair-accessible vans.

THE VIBE: The festive crowd was greeted by an army of 175 volunteers, each wearing cheerful t-shirts with the Houston Children’s Charity logo and the organization’s signature yellow brand color, which perfectly complemented the beaming smiles on each of their faces. This allowed each of the 98 families in attendance to have personalized attention and support from the Houston Children’s Charity family during the afternoon’s festivities.

In the Post Oak Ballroom foyer, families took the opportunity to commemorate the afternoon with an image on a vibrant step-and-repeat featuring balloons in bold colors and patterns. Families took the time to mingle with other Chariots for Children families. Additionally, many families met Houston Children’s Charity donors, whose generosity made the afternoon possible.

The crowd then headed into The Post Oak Ballroom for the main program. The space was transformed into a childlike wonderland with yellow tablecloths and bold, colored accents that perfectly captured the essence of the day.

As everyone took to their seats and tables, guests were greeted with words from event and organization leaders thanking them for being a part of the afternoon’s festivities. During the program, Houston City Council Member, At-Large Position 3, Twilia Carter read a proclamation issued by Houston Mayor John Whitmire declaring March 23, 2026 Chariots for Children Day to Houston Children’s Charity President & CEO Laura S. Ward in recognition of the transformative impact the program has had on the Houston community.

The program concluded on a high note as each family, along with the vans’ sponsors, was called to the stage to receive their vans. After receiving the keys, they gathered in The Post Oak Hotel Parking Lot, where the 98 wheelchair-accessible bands, each with a bold red ribbon placed on the hood, awaited them.  The vans, which cost anywhere from $60,000-$100,000 based on the needs of individual children and families, helped remove a substantial financial barrier and forever changed the lives of the families who received them.

THE NON-PROFIT: Chariots for Children, a flagship program of Houston Children’s Charity, provides wheelchair-accessible vans to families, enabling them to care for their children with disabilities. The 98 vans distributed at the 2026 Chariots for Children were made possible by the support from generous donors at the 2025 Houston Charity Gala, where the Chariots for Children Paddles-Up appeal raised an astounding $5.39 million.
