On April 25, Dallas will don its most dashing attire and gather beneath a flourish of crimson blooms for a cause that has quietly transformed lives for nearly half a century. The 45th Annual Blue Ribbon Gala benefiting Equest promises all the glamour of a spring social season crescendo, yet at its heart beats something far more enduring: the extraordinary healing power of the human-horse connection. At the reins of this sapphire anniversary celebration are Gala Chair Melinda Knowles and her co-chair and husband, Mark Knowles… two leaders whose résumés read like a master class in Dallas civic commitment, as our Lance Avery Morgan learns when he caught up with the duo to learn more about the organization’s signature fundraising event.

A Legacy Measured In Breakthroughs

Founded in 1981, Equest has grown into one of the nation’s leading equine-assisted therapy centers, serving children and adults with physical, cognitive, sensory, and emotional challenges, as well as veterans navigating trauma and transition. What began as a visionary idea has become a cornerstone of therapeutic innovation in North Texas.

“Stewarding Equest’s 45th anniversary Blue Ribbon Gala feels profoundly humbling and deeply meaningful to me,” Melinda Knowles shares. “For 45 years, Equest has been a beacon in Dallas and beyond, quietly transforming lives through the extraordinary power of the horse-human connection.”

That legacy, she emphasizes, is deeply personal. “It’s thousands of individual breakthroughs and families forever changed.”

The Woman In The Winner’s Circle

Melinda Knowles is no stranger to guiding institutions to their most triumphant moments. A graduate of Ursuline Academy and Mary Baldwin University, and formerly an investment banker, she has become one of Dallas philanthropy’s most respected leaders.

Her service spans the city’s most influential charitable organizations. She has held chair and board roles with Dallas for Children, the Dallas Institute for Culture and Humanities, the Harvest Gala for North Texas Food Bank, Vine & Dine for Ability Connection, The Callier Center Ambassadors, The Women of St. Michael’s and All Angels Luncheon, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s St. Valentine’s Fashion Show and Luncheon.

She has also chaired committees for The Hockaday School Gala, The Greenhill School Gala, The Salvation Army Fashion Show and Luncheon, The Salvation Army Auxiliary, and the Crystal Charity Ball, of which she is a member.

Yet for all the sparkle of ballrooms past, this moment feels different.

“As someone who has loved horses my entire life,” she says, “Equest perfectly marries two things I hold dear: the almost magical bond between people and horses, and the calling to serve those in need through compassionate, evidence-based equine-assisted services.”

For Melinda, leadership is less about recognition and more about resonance. “Leadership in Dallas philanthropy means stepping up with humility, vision, and a genuine commitment to collaboration,” she explains. “Using influence, resources, and relationships not for personal recognition, but to create lasting, measurable impact.”

The Strategist Beside Her

Mark Knowles brings a different, but equally essential, kind of horsepower to the gala. A graduate of Duke University and the University of Kansas School of Law, he chairs the Banking and Corporate Finance Practice at Condon Tobin Sladek PLLC and serves as President of the Secured Finance Network of Dallas. He is accustomed to navigating complex financial landscapes with clarity and composure.

“As a corporate finance lawyer, I tackle complex challenges and focus on meaningful stakeholder impact,” says Mark Knowles. “These skills shape my approach to service. Equest’s equine therapy is a powerful investment in human potential with lasting returns.”

He defines leadership simply: “Stewardship, authenticity, consistency, listening, collaboration, and a focus on measurable outcomes.”

In philanthropy, as in finance, the fundamentals matter.

A Marriage Of Mission

Co-chairing a gala of this magnitude might test lesser partnerships. For the Knowleses, it has deepened theirs.

“As co-chairs, we approach it as true partners,” Melinda says. “It’s not about dividing tasks rigidly but about playing to what each of us does best.”

She credits Mark’s calm, strategic perspective; he credits her vision and emotional intelligence. “The truth is, Melinda, does the lion’s share of the work,” Mark insists. “Her passion, ability to connect with people, and commitment to Equest’s mission are inspiring to watch.”

Their shorthand, built over decades of marriage, keeps the operation seamless. “There’s no ego in it,” Melinda says. “It’s about amplifying Equest’s impact.”

Why “Run For The Roses” Fits

This year’s theme draws inspiration from the Kentucky Derby, affectionately known as “The Run for the Roses.” The Derby champion is draped in a garland of more than 400 red roses, an emblem of triumph earned through partnership, discipline, and heart.

“That mirrors exactly what we see every day in equine therapy,” the couple explains. “Participants push through barriers to reach their own personal victories.”

For Melinda, the symbolism is poetic. “The rose garland isn’t just decoration; it’s a crown of accomplishment. That’s what we’re fundraising for: helping more people earn their own ‘roses’ through healing.”

The Moment That Sealed It

During a visit to Equest’s arena, the Knowleses witnessed a young child with significant disabilities hesitate before mounting a horse. The horse lowered its head, waiting.

“The boy reached out, touched the horse’s neck, and let out a soft, clear sound of joy that everyone in the arena heard,” Melinda recalls.

As he rode, something shifted. His posture strengthened. His smile widened.

“Horses don’t judge; they mirror emotions and respond with honesty,” she says. “Watching that wordless connection unfold truly moved me.”

They left knowing their involvement would not be fleeting.

The Future Of Equine Healing

Equine-assisted therapy continues to gain broader recognition as research explores its benefits in emotional regulation, trauma recovery, and neurobiological development. In a state with one of the nation’s largest veteran populations and growing needs around autism and mental health, demand is rising.

“These programs are resource-intensive,” the Knowleses note. “They require land, trained professionals, well-cared-for horses, and financial support to ensure access for families who might not otherwise afford it.”

Which is precisely why this gala matters.

“It’s not just a fundraiser,” they say. “It’s a way for everyone to invest in hope.

What They Hope Lingers

When the final auction paddle lowers and the last dance concludes, what should guests carry home?

Entertainment at the Equest Gala

“A profound sense of hope,” they answer together.

They want attendees to understand that their presence fuels tangible transformation, that somewhere in Dallas, a child will sit taller, a veteran will breathe easier, and a family will glimpse possibility because of the evening’s generosity.

“If guests leave thinking, ‘The bond between humans and horses can heal in ways nothing else can and we helped make more of that possible,’” Mark says, “then we’ve succeeded.”

Forty-five years in, Equest’s story is still unfolding: one rider, one breakthrough, one rose at a time.
