THE SCENE: The Wortham Theater Center in Houston was the setting for a fabulous kick-off for the season for one of the world’s most respected artistic organizations. Approximately 300 of Space City’s most notable art patrons, community leaders, performers, sociables, and philanthropists turned out for the annual Houston Grand Opera Opening Night Dinner for a multi-act night of music and food that those fortunate enough to be a part of will not soon forget.

THE VIBE: The black-tie crowd wore an elegant mix of formal attire that was just as artful as the world-class music patrons experienced throughout the evening. In the crowd, one could spot ballgowns and tuxedos in an array of colors, including jewel tones, metallics, and prints. The result was a festive environment where everyone felt welcome.

Patrons began at the Brown Stage of the Wortham Theater Center. Here, they were treated to a showstopping and moving performance of the classic story Porgy and Bess, the George Gershwin-composed opera that Houston Grand Opera first produced for Houston audiences in 1976. The score of the period piece set in the fictional Catfish Row featured a seamless blend of jazz, spirituals, blues, and classical music.

After the performance, guests departed their seats and headed to a tented space in Fish Plaza for dinner and the second act of the evening. The Events Company transformed the space that transported guests to Charleston with a beautiful color palette of cream and green colors, complete with soft candlelight and an elegant mix of continental and round tables.

As partygoers’ jaws dropped upon entering the dazzling tent, they were greeted by music provided by Jazz Houston musicians. Guests then took to their seats and enjoyed a delectable, multi-course, Southern-inspired meal courtesy of City Kitchen.

During the program, attendees were treated to words from event and organization leaders thanking them for taking part in the kickoff of the upcoming season, which, if Opening Night was any indication, is destined to be one of Houston Grand Opera’s most memorable in years.

THE NON-PROFIT: The 2025 Houston Grand Opera Opening Night Dinner, co-chaired by Dina Alsowayel and Tony Chase, raised over $690,000 for the Houston Grand Opera. Proceeds from the event will support programs that fulfill the organization’s mission to advance operatic art, serve the Houston community, and lead the future of opera. In 2025, Houston Grand Opera was the only American Finalist for Opera Company of the Year at the 2025 International Opera Awards.
