When novelist Benny Dink’s career and love life simultaneously fall apart, he heads home to Louisiana for his sister’s third wedding, only to find that integrity, like family, can be the hardest thing to hold onto. Sell Out, a film by brothers Nick and Josh Holden, captures that delicate balance between staying true to your art and surviving the realities of modern life. In an exclusive interview, actress Adrianne Palicki, who co-stars in the film, reveals to our Lance Avery Morgan what the project means to her as it debuts at the Austin Film Festival.
Staying True In “Sell Out”: The Holden Brothers’ Latest Austin-Made Gem
In the new film Sell Out, novelist and single father Benny Dink (played with emotional precision and charm) finds his carefully constructed life unraveling just as he approaches forty. His publisher rejects his latest book, his engagement collapses, and with both pride and purpose shaken, he returns to his hometown in Louisiana to officiate his sister’s third wedding.
Back in the familiar yet uneasy terrain of his youth, Benny confronts a swirl of existential questions about art, integrity, and what it means to “sell out” in a world that seems to reward compromise. Between dodging his childhood best friend, now a political candidate with questionable ethics, and weighing a lucrative but morally murky job offer, Benny’s journey is a sharply observed meditation on staying true to oneself when everything around you begs you not to.
Filmed primarily on Austin, Sell Out is a true Texas production through and through. The film features a who’s who of Lone Star talent and even introduces members of the Holden family, Lana Holden as Marie Dink and Adeline Holden as Lili Dink, adding a familial authenticity to the ensemble cast.

A Passion Project With Purpose
“We are beyond excited to share this film,” say brothers Nick and Josh Holden, who wrote, directed, and produced Sell Out. “It’s a true passion project, made with love and intention. We designed the pace of the shoot to tell the story on our own terms, giving ourselves and the cast the time and space to inhabit the characters, explore their nuances, and have fun improvising. The result is a film we are deeply proud of; a timely and resonant story about what it means to sell out in today’s world, and, more importantly, what it means to be true to yourself.”
The Holden brothers’ creative partnership has been nearly two decades in the making. Since founding their production company, Mishnoon, in Austin in 2008, they’ve built a rich filmography rooted in character, philosophy, and the humor of human absurdity. Their early work, music documentaries, and videos within the Outlaw Country scene connected them with legends like Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, and Kris Kristofferson. It even led to filming behind-the-scenes footage for the Grammy-winning soundtrack to Crazy Heart in 2009.
Originally from Los Angeles but raised in Louisiana, the brothers migrated to Austin for college in the early 2000s and never looked back. Nick, who studied philosophy and literature at St. Edward’s University, brings a cerebral edge to their projects, weaving questions of meaning and morality into each narrative. Josh, a University of Texas graduate with a degree in Radio-Television-Film, balances that with a filmmaker’s instinct for visual rhythm and emotional storytelling. Together, their collaboration captures a mix of intellectual depth, grounded humor, and the signature Texan authenticity that’s become their hallmark.

Adrianne Palicki On Art, Authenticity, And The Austin Energy
Actress Adrianne Palicki, known for her work in Friday Night Lights and The Orville, stars as Noelle, Benny’s steadying force and moral compass in Sell Out. For Palicki, the project was both personal and professional.
“Working on Sell Out was an absolute blast,” she shares. “Anytime I get to work in my backyard, I jump at the chance. Austin is my favorite place, my home, and the community here is truly special, not to mention the film community.”
Palicki was instantly drawn to the story’s artistic dilemma.
“The story hits home as an artist,” she says. “Sometimes it’s hard choosing truth and art over a paycheck, especially when you don’t know when the next one will come. I was also intrigued by my character, Noelle, because she’s such an advocate for Benny staying true to himself and his worth.”
Beyond the story’s resonance, Palicki believes the film’s emotional authenticity is amplified by the natural chemistry among the cast and crew.
“I think part of the ‘Austin Energy’ isn’t just the skyline; it’s the relationships,” she adds. “Many of us have worked together before and are dear friends. That sense of camaraderie makes a huge difference, and I think it translates to the big screen. Plus, the Holden brothers are absolute gems to work with.”
Sell Out isn’t just a film about compromise; it’s a love letter to creative conviction, community, and the courage it takes to stand by your work in an increasingly transactional world. With its heart in Austin and its soul in Louisiana, it’s a modern Southern story told with humor, honesty, and humanity.
Not only was the film heralded at the Austin Film Festival in October, but it has also been featured at the Lone Star Film Festival on October 30 – November 5 in Fort Worth, and the Southern Screen Film Festival on November 13-16 in Lafayette, LA.
