THE SCENE: The Wortham Center for the Performing Arts in Houston was the setting for a love-filled night of fun and fundraising that resulted in a record-breaking night for one of Space City’s most beloved artistic organizations. Over 450 of the area’s top art patrons, sociables, and philanthropists turned out for Opera Ball 2025, which benefited the Houston Grand Opera.

THE VIBE: The white-tie optional crowd featured a mix of white-tie and black-tie ensembles. One could spot patrons donning classic formal wear, while others took liberty in taking advantage of the Love Is In The Air theme, which was inspired by the Houston Grand Opera’s 2024-2025 season theme Truly. Madly. Deeply, by donning bright colors and floral prints. The result was a festive environment where all felt welcome.
The night began with a cocktail reception in the Wortham foyer. Richard Flowers of The Events Company transformed the space into an enchanting Roman garden, complete with a vibrant floral palette of spring colors and Ionic columns. They sipped on bubbles provided by J&D Entertainment. Others could be spotted commemorating the evening at two different event activations, including 360-degree photos courtesy of 360 Photo Booth and bespoke haikus created by Haikuists.

Guests then took to their seats for the main program. As guests dined on a delectable, multi-course meal courtesy of City Kitchen Catering, they were treated to words from the event and organization leaders thanking them for participating in such a special evening.

The program was capped off by surprising honorees Dian and Harlan Stai…and the audience with a legendary performance by mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade. Accompanied by Houston Grand Opera Artistic and Musical Director Patrick Summers, to the legendary Stephen Sondheim tune Send in the Clowns, which brought the crowd to their feet.

The fun continued with a dazzling after-party where tunes by The Party Feels kept the crowd on the dance floor. Some engaged in interacting with dancing florals courtesy of J&D Entertainment while others took advantage, enjoying some late-night sweets courtesy of Twirl Cotton Candy, capping off a fabulous evening that those fortunate enough to be a part of will not soon forget.

THE NON-PROFIT: Opera Ball 2025, chaired by Margaret Alkek Williams, raised a record-shattering $2 million for Houston Grand Opera. Proceeds from the event will support Houston Grand Opera’s initiatives to introduce children and adults to the beauty of music by providing critical arts education to ensure that opera remains accessible to everyone.
